The First Multicultural Sorority in the Nation

SO WHO DARES STEP INTO THE REALM OF A MU.......

Mu Sigma Upsilon was founded with the belief that Mujeres Siempre Unidas (Women Always United) come from all cultures and identities to share one common thing, to create a support system for women to celebrate diversity. MSU was founded on November 21st 1981 at Rutgers University, New Brunswick as the first multicultural sorority in the nation by five women: our founding mothers. Today we honor them for starting a bluetiful family and creating a space for women to feel accepted for who they truly are. 35 years later, the one seed they planted blossomed 57 times at DePauw University.

MSU currently has 64 chapters nationwide.

MSU takes pride in Saluting, Stepping and Strolling

Saluting

Mu Sigma Upsilon Sorority, Inc. salutes in different languages to honor the sisters from different cultures and languages. Saluting is a form of respect and as a multicultural sorority, MSU honors its diversity.

Stepping

Stepping is a form of art through clapping, stomping, and spoken word that

allows the body to be an instrument to create rhythms and sounds. It roots from African communities. Created as a movement and to build community.

Strolling

Strolling is an energized, synchronized dance. Strolling is performed in a line of sisters. MSU has national, regional, and chapter step and stroll teams. These dedicated teams represent MSU by competing or performing for fun.

Philanthropy

As sisters of Mu Sigma Upsilon Sorority, Inc. we commit to our three goals: Academic Excellence, Unity Amongst all Women and to be Active in the University and Community. One way we do this is through the service and dedication to our philanthropy. MSU's philanthropy is one of a kind and aims to help organizations that are underrepresented and impactful to our sisters. MSU changes philanthropy every five years. Through the five year term, we are able to dedicate ourselves to one charity organization. Philanthropies are proposed by any sister who wishes a charity organization to be part of our philanthropy.

MSU Philanthropy for the 2016-2021 is To Write Love On Her Arms (TWLOHA)

"To Write Love on Her Arms is a non-profit movement dedicated to presenting hope and finding help for people struggling with depression, addiction, self-injury, and suicide. TWLOHA exists to encourage, inform, inspire, and also to invest directly into treatment and recovery"

Upsilon Family

"Born from a common seed and developed into a divine entity, our family is a special place where we share life’s experiences using both the positive and negative as tools of enrichment.  Together we will pave the way for the men and women for generations to come"

We are bound by our history and tradition and we will forever remain a family: The Upsilon Family
